Debut as Boris in Janáček’s Káť’a Kabanová
Following his performances as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s Tosca at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santa Domingo in Colombia, Mr Smith returns to Europe to make his house debut singing the role of Boris in Janáček’s Kát’a Kabanová at the Opéra national de Lyon in France.
Set in a provincial town in mid-19th century tsarist Russia, this tragic opera tells the story of a young woman who is driven to suicide by the hypocritical morality of society. Janáček combines Slavic-folkloric sounds with influences derived from church music, and expertly allocates these to the characters’ psychology, ultimately constructing a work that is both a compelling character portrait and a modern masterpiece of musical drama. Mr. Smith is joined by Corinne Winters as the title-role, Natasha Petrinsky as Kabanicha, Oliver Johnston as Tikhon and Willard White as Dikoy. This female-led production is staged by Barbara Wysocka and conducted by Elena Schwarz.
Performances take place on 28th April; 2nd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th May. Tickets and more information can be found here.
